(a) It should be relevant to the product, the market it is sold in, the time, the place etc.
Relevant for a particular use. If the information on a sales summary would not be relevant to the manager of the payroll department

(b) It should be complete. 98% complete may as well be 10% complete. We cannot tell what information is in the other 2%.
Complete incomplete sales information might give rise to an incorrect sales forecast

(c) It should be accurate enough for the purpose (note this does not necessarily mean that it must be 100% accurate) Again, the weather is a good example.
Accuracy/correct – this means that the information on an invoice must be exact to the nearest penny otherwise customers may complain
/incorrect stock figures may cause the manager to re-order the wrong amounts

(d) It should be clear to the user – in a form that the user can understand – otherwise it may be misunderstood or not even understandable.

(e) It should be authoritative so that the user can have confidence in it, whether it be certified or guaranteed by themselves or another external regulatory body.

(f) It should be up to date, but this level changes. For example, rock formations do not generally change from day-to-day, whereas the weather does.
Up to Date In a five year old list of e-mail addresses would be out of date and may mean that people have changed address and cannot be contacted

(g) It should be available when needed, through numerous communication methods. Look at the development of the mobile satellite systems in cars.

(h) The cost of obtaining it should be less than the value of the benefit it provides – it should be cost effective for the buyer. For example, why pay £1,000 for data which is only going to save the company £50? Of course, the seller of the information will continually be trying to charge more than the information is worth.

So, to conclude:

For information to have a value, it should be:

relevant, complete, accurate, clear, authoritative, up-to-date, available, cost efficient.
