I want you to do research on Sony throughout this lesson and then feedback to the class via the website at the end of the lesson.

Sony has set out to captivate the advertising world once again with a new commercial designed to showcase the capabilities of its range of Handycam and Cyber-shot products.

Shot in Miami, Florida, the advert, entitled ‘Foam City’, involves the Downtown area of the city being transformed into a foam-filled wonderland – with whole streets filled with foam and bubbles.

The world’s largest foam machine was built especially for the ad with over two million litres of foam being produced every minute.

What you will do:

You will write a ½ page summary of Sony’s approach to marketing:

• What is Sony’s approach to pricing?
• What is Sony’s approach to product development?
• What do you think about Sony’s methods of promotion?
• What about where Sony choose to sell their products?

Suitable searches that I want you to read and summarise:

sony marketing campaign
sony advert
sony pricing

You need to understand the wide range of influences on an organisation, both internal and external, and the types of decisions that have to be made relating to these influences in order to keep the organisation moving forward in line with management plans. To achieve this, organisations have different marketing objectives, strategic or tactical, depending on how the objectives support the business plans.

Analysis of the organisation’s current and future situation can be made using planning tools such as SWOT and PESTLE analyses to inform marketing decisions in terms of:

• whether a product should be developed or launched
• whether these decisions are strategic or tactical
• competitive advantage
• whether the timing is right
• whether the correct market has been identified.

You also need to learn the impact these may have on the marketing mix. To do this you need to investigate influences that impact on the planning process, such as:

• marketing environment, both macro and micro competition
• social, cultural, environmental, economic issues.

What to do…

Read through the above and, with your notes, answer the two questions below and then upload in the comments section below:

1) Complete a SWOT analysis for a chosen company (for example, Carphone Warehouse)

2) Complete a PESTLE analysis for a chosen company (for example, a local restaurant)

Guidance will be needed to locate possible sources of finance for the proposed development and a realistic budget, projected cash flow forecast and break-even analysis will also be necessary. The costing already carried out in 8.2 should provide a basis for forecasting these. Information gathered from the market analysis, together with some logical reasoning, will give rise to probable trading and profit and loss accounts and a balance sheet.
It may be useful to suggest a pro-forma-style spreadsheet approach (using appropriate formulae) to the cash flow that will allow for some changes to be incorporated to the figures produced and enhance any evaluation carried out as below.

Have you ever wondered how much money EasyJet makes per flight?

You will all have heard of EasyJet, but how much do they actually make for every flight that they make? Is it worth the hassle? Read through the case study and then answer the questions that follow:

It’s the question that everyone who has ever flown on a low cost airline has asked….”How do they do it?” For example, you can fly from London Luton to Nice in France, for around £20 each way. That’s a flight of nearly 700 miles for less than the price of a couple of CDs. Admittedly, those who book their ticket towards the end will end up paying £120 each way. The average price of an EasyJet ticket is £48.70. Before EasyJet, you would struggle to find a ticket for a plane journey for less than £200.

But, the low fares still equate to very healthy profits for businesses like EasyJet. In fact, RyanAir is the ONLY European airline company who have made a profit in each of the last 13 years. Lets have a look at the facts for a typical flight…

Ground Handling Charges

£542

Airport Charges

£817

Navigation

£420

Crew Salaries and Training

£643

Advertising

£215

Fuel

£614

Credit Card Charges

£101

Admin Costs

£728

Cost of the Aircraft

£676

Tax

£251

Total Cost

£5,591

Total Income

£6,136

Profit

£545

As a percentage

8.9%

Some of the golden rules that EasyJet try to employ include:

-Only fly one type of plane. The idea is to allow any plane to fly any route at any time.
-Drive down costs every year.
-Cut unit costs by 10% each year.
-Look for economies of scale in each and every department.
-EasyJet makes 8.9p in every pound a profit….Tesco has only 3.6p
-Using the internet can save a great deal of money

Questions

A	What is the key business objective for EasyJet?
B	Who are EasyJet’s main competitors?
C	How strong is the EasyJet brand name?
D	What can they do with this brand name? List other ones that you know of.
E	How do you think they have developed

The main objective for any business is to satisfy their customers. That is to say, businesses to succeed must provide what their customers want. There is no right or wrong, no one method to satisfy customers. Some customers
want a low selling price, others want high quality. In this entry, we will begin to look at how businesses use Aims and Objectives to align their business.

Lets start by looking at some typical objectives for a business and try to classify them in to either short term (that is, less than two years) and long term:

After opening, we aim to survive the first year (short term)

Expansion and, ultimately, beginning a chain of shops (long term)

In the next year, we aim to increase sales by 10% (short term)

Establish excellent communication and working relationships with all our suppliers (long term)

We have only looked at four objectives but it is clear that objectives can be classified as either short or long term.

Differences between goods and services

Businesses will either sell goods or services or a mixture of both. A good is tangible (that is to say, you can touch it) whereas a service is a task being solved.

Examples of goods include:

Food

Drink

Clothes

Examples of services include:

Taxi or bus journey

Hairdressers

Physiotherapist

Selling or doing what the customer wants

Irrespective of whether you are selling a good or service, for your business to survive, it must meet the needs of your customers. Businesses can complete Market Research in order to help their business gain an understanding of what it is their customers want.

Information Communication Technology (ICT) can also help in tracking sales, charting profitability and attempting to predict future sales.

Who do businesses tell their objectives to?

Businesses can tell their objectives to a number of people including:

Workers

Financial backers (through a financial plan)

Customers (through a customer charter, motto, slogan etc)

The national press (TV, Newspaper etc. through a press conference)

Over to you

A Think of three businesses and name them (aim for one small, one medium and one large)
B List three short term objectives for each business
C List three long term objectives for each business
D How does each company ‘meet the needs of their customers’?
