Learning

We believe that setting challenging but attainable targets gives students extra impetus to improve their achievement.  Students are assessed at regular intervals and meetings held with parents and carers to discuss present performance and set targets for coming months.  Great importance is attached to parental involvement in helping students achieve their full potential.

We also believe that recognition of success is a spur to continued achievement.  Our system of rewards includes special comments in student diaries, commendations, College Points, congratulation postcards, and awards at the annual Merit and Progress celebration.

The curriculum in all subjects is tailored to the learners.  Students with special educational needs or English as an additional language may need differentiated materials for use in class, or direct support from a Learning Assistant.  Students who are gifted or talented in particular areas are supported with fast track classes or extension tasks.  Almost all students move on to University after the Sixth Form, including Oxbridge.

Every student carries a diary in which details of homework is entered, and which also acts as the main communication between teachers and parents.  Homework is an essential part of every student’s study at all age groups.  Each student has a homework timetable and is expected to spend some time studying each evening. We rely on parental encouragement to complete homework, preferably in a quiet area without distractions.  Our Home School Agreement sets out the roles and responsibilities of the school, parent and student.  It is signed by all parties as each student is admitted to the school.

Uniform is compulsory for all students in Year 7 to 11 and a smart turnout is expected at all times, including during PE lessons.
